Village exec accepts ‘challenge,' donates salary to trike drivers

MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – A village official here donated his one-month salary to support tricycle drivers in his community amid the steep fuel prices.

Barangay Calbueg Kagawad James Bataan said he was tagged in a social media post by a fellow councilor who was first to allocate his one-month salary to help his constituents.

“I was challenged," the 35-year-old first-termer said in Filipino in an interview Monday.

He spent his salary to buy five kilos of rice, and gave away cash and PHP100 cash fuel subsidy to 27 tricycle drivers in their village.

"We are experiencing a crisis, making their (trike drivers) work and source of livelihood even more difficult, and there are a few passengers now that there are no classes," Bataan said.

He said elected officials have a mandate to help and serve.

“This is our chance now that we are going through a crisis," he said. (PNA)
