MANILA – Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla on Tuesday said his office aims to be proactive in combating government corruption.
"I don't want [it] to be just a reactionary office. I want it to be a proactive office. That's why this planning session is important," Remulla said at a press briefing in Baguio City where the Office of the Ombudsman was holding a strategic planning session.
He stressed the need to identify the office’s strengths and weaknesses to better address challenges, noting that pursuing corrupt officials is not an easy task.
"Mabigat ang kalaban ng Ombudsman. Corruption kasi. Maraming pera sa corruption. 'Yan ang kalaban namin: Pera. Kaya dapat nakaplano kami, dapat (The Ombudsman has a strong adversary, which is corruption. Corruption involves a lot of money. That is what we are up against: Money. That is why we should plan carefully and) we act as a team," he said.
Remulla added that the Ombudsman should instill fear among corrupt officials and private individuals involved in corruption, as fear can sometimes deter wrongdoing.
"It's so sad to say but sometimes fear is the only thing that will stop people from doing what should not be done," he said. (PNA)
