PBBM pushes for global protection for migrants, seafarers

NEW YORK CITY – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday (New York time) emphasized the importance of migration and the protection of migrants and seafarers.

Speaking during the special plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters here, Marcos said migration is “a force for good and that migrants contribute to sustainable development in the countries of their origin, in transit, and in their destinations.”

“Migrants, including seafarers, connect our nations,” Marcos said.

Marcos said migrant rights should unite, not divide, countries.

“Their dignity and rights should serve as a unifying principle, not a divisive fault line, for governments worldwide,” he said.

Marcos emphasized the Philippines’ support for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, calling on the international community to support the upcoming International Migration Review Forum (IMRF).

The Second IMRF will take place from May 5 to 8 at the UN headquarters, serving as the primary global platform to assess progress and share practices on implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration.

“In light of the funding shortfalls faced by the UN, the Philippines has been vocal in its support for reforms that will enable the UN to deliver on its mandates, while lessening bureaucracy and fragmentation,” Marcos said. (PNA)
