Iligan City seeks national gov’t help for drainage master plan

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The city government of Iligan on Wednesday sought assistance from the national government, particularly President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., to support its drainage master plan to prevent future flooding.

In a statement, Councilor Derrick Thomas Siao said he passed a resolution seeking support through the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for additional assistance for the master plan.

In the master plan, the local government's share alone would cost PHP936.6 million.

"This is a measure in response to the effects of [Tropical Storm] Basyang following the declaration of a state of calamity in Iligan City," he said.

Siao hopes that with the master plan, the city's drainage system will be strengthened with robust infrastructure to prevent future flooding and ensure safety.

In his recent visit to the city, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon directed the regional office and the Lone District Engineering Office of Iligan City to mobilize and fast-track " Oplan Kontra Baha."

Dizon learned that in Barangay Mandulog, floodwaters from the swollen Mandulog River during storms flowed through the gap between the final part of the flood control project in the southeast and the new Mandulog bridge, which gives access to Barangay Lanipao and other hinterland barangays.

Dizon directed the contractors assigned to complete repairs and new projects before the next rainy season.

Maricel Cadampug, 34, a resident of Barangay Lanipao, has to travel with her husband on a single motorcycle from Iligan City to buy food, passing through the Mandulog Bridge with a temporary approach. (PNA)
