DAVAO CITY – The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Davao Region (DSWD-11) is celebrating the 75th founding anniversary of the agency this month with a renewed commitment to strengthen social protection services and programs for the poor, vulnerable and marginalized sectors.
Michelle Franca, DSWD-11 information officer, told the Philippine News Agency on Friday that part of the agency’s efforts are ongoing construction and improvement of centers across the region.
“This includes expanding bed capacities in our home for the aged, the reception study center for children and Angel’s Haven,” Franca said.
Angel’s Haven is for bedridden and semi-ambulatory children with varying degrees of disabilities.
She added that the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations program continues to provide medical, burial, transportation, education, food and financial aid to individuals and families in need.
“Beyond financial aid, we also provide assistance across various sectors. Innovation is part of our social protection efforts, such as the Pag-abot program and the expansion of our social technology initiatives, which are currently in pilot testing and being improved,” Franca said.
Among these social technology programs are Project Aruga in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, and Program Solo in Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
Pag-abot (reaching out) is for street dwellers, Aruga (caring) is for children with disabilities and Solo for single parents.
“We have served numerous beneficiaries through these programs in partnership with national agencies and local government units,” she said.
As part of its anniversary activities, DSWD-11 will launch “Apo Ko,” a project that promotes intergenerational bonding by connecting senior citizens with children for storytelling and cultural sharing.
The agency will also introduce the Angel’s Pet program, designed to support individuals and families coping with mental and emotional challenges. (Che Palicte/PNA)
