DOE: MTerra solar, battery capacity to boost power supply

MANILA – The Department of Energy (DOE) on Monday said the energization of 250 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and 450 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage by MTerra Solar strengthens the country’s energy security.

"Every megawatt of domestic capacity that we bring into the grid strengthens our ability to withstand external shocks, protect consumers, and preserve system reliability," DOE Secretary Sharon Garin said in a statement.

"Amid the Middle East conflict, accelerating the development of renewable energy and storage is both a strategic necessity and a national imperative," she added.

Terra Solar Philippines Inc. (MTerra Solar) has energized the first 250 MW of its solar capacity, now operating as a generator and contributing to rising demand for reliable, clean energy.

It also activated the first tranche of its battery energy storage system (BESS), delivering up to 450 MWh to the grid at night — now the largest operational BESS in the country.

The DOE said the added capacity provides immediate grid support, improving flexibility and reliability while reducing dependence on imported fuels.

The agency will continue to fast-track renewable energy and storage projects in coordination with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, the Energy Regulatory Commission, and other stakeholders. (PNA)
