Deal inked to advance green shipping, improve mariners' welfare

MANILA – The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has partnered with Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement International (Philippines) Corp. (BSM PH) towards advancing green shipping and improving mariners' training and wellness.

In a message to reporters on Wednesday, MARINA press officer Tretch Melarpes said the partnership was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that covers training on the safe operation of ships using methanol and ammonia as alternative fuels, energy-efficient operations, and emission reduction measures.

For its initial year of implementation, the partnership will roll out initiatives such as the facilitation of training of trainers for the revised Basic Training - Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (BT-PSSR) and the provision of learning facilities.

“The partnership with BSM Philippines includes methanol training for MARINA personnel, provision of experts for a seafarers’ mental health course, and development of guidance for dual-fuel ammonia operations,” Melarpes said.

The MOU was signed by MARINA Administrator Malaluan and BSM Group Representative Guengoer Ates and witnessed by other executives from both parties at the MARINA headquarters in Port Area, Manila, on Tuesday.

“BSM Philippines contributes technical expertise and global industry experience, while MARINA provides regulatory direction and ensures integration into maritime education and training,” he said.

In a separate statement, MARINA said both parties under the MOU commit to collaborating on the development of regulatory frameworks that support environmental sustainability, safety, and mental health wellness of seafarers.

“The MOU also emphasizes the adoption of innovative technologies, including green fuels training, energy-efficient operations, and emission reduction measures,” it said. (PNA)
