Closer gov’t-private sector tie-up to figure out pros, cons of AI

MANILA – With the evolving ways on how to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to improve systems and services, along with how scammers are using this for their operations, a closer coordination between the government and the private sector is needed to ensure public safety.

Ryan Flores, Threat Research Director of security software firm Trend Micro Inc., said during a briefing Tuesday that companies are adopting AI-related systems and governments are firm on ensuring a conducive environment for this.

He said companies both here and overseas are pressured to adapt to AI “because the competitors are the ones who are adopting and implementing it themselves.”

On the other end are the governments, which, he said, “are still exploring the policies that they need to put in place for safe adoption, safe deployment, and also ethical use and deployment of AI.”

Flores said these measures should not come solely from the government but from organizations, through dialogues with all stakeholders.

"So, I think it's up to the organizations to also be on top of these things … We are living on very fast times. I think everyone should just be also trying to run as fast as we can and keep abreast of all these things,” he said.

“The government can exert pressure on the AI developers, AI vendors, and also educate the public on what this new technology is about and how to handle this new technology,” he added.

Trend Micro Inc. PH country director Ian Felipe, for his part, said the government could contribute to safe AI use by being open to collaboration with private organizations that are into AI.

For private firms that have done extensive research on AI, Felipe said they can help share information that the government may use to educate the public. (PNA)
