Basyang causes P11.2-M losses in Caraga’s fishery sector

BUTUAN CITY – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Caraga Region (BFAR-13) reported PHP11.2 million in damages to the fishery sector in the area due to the onslaught of Tropical Storm (TS) Basyang.

Basyang made landfall in Bayabas, Surigao del Sur on the evening of Feb. 5, bringing heavy rains to most parts of the region.

“The recorded damages are based on the reports submitted by the respective Provincial Fisheries Office as of Feb. 10,” the information office of BFAR-13 said in a statement on Tuesday.

It added that damages incurred include the production, paraphernalia, and facilities of individual fisherfolk and their associations.

Data indicated that damages to production reached PHP9.9 million, affecting 81.46 metric tons of fishery production and 140 fisherfolk in the region.

About PHP1.06 million worth of equipment, composed of 466 units of fiberglass boats, solar lights and fishing nets of 279 fisherfolk, were also damaged during the storm.

The data also show that 21 facilities owned by 39 fisherfolk groups incurred PHP170,000 in damages.

Most of the damaged facilities are the dry docks and salt beds in the town of Lingig and the post-harvest facilities in Cantilan, both in Surigao del Sur.

“The BFAR-13, through its provincial offices, is working closely with local government units to continue monitoring the situation of fisherfolk affected by TS Basyang,” the BFAR-13 information office said. (PNA)
