BAGUIO CITY – The local police called on motorists anew to comply with traffic rules and regulations.
“Sumunod lang po tayo sa mga ordinansa na naitalaga sa paggamit natin ng ating mga kakalsadahan para sa safety natin at para na din sa safety ng mga kababayan natin (Let us follow the ordinances being imposed in the utilization of our roads for our safety and that of the public,” Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) director Col. Ruel Tagel said in a message Wednesday.
Data obtained from the BCPO showed a total of 5,570 motorists were apprehended for violating Ordinance 7-2010 or the "King of the Road Ordinance" requiring drivers to slow down and stop before a pedestrian lane.
Meanwhile, 213,867 were apprehended for violating Ordinance 7-84 or the Anti-Road Obstruction Ordinance, while another 1,300 drivers were flagged for violating Ordinance 18-2019, setting a speed limit on certain roads.
From January 2026 to date, a total of 6,942 apprehensions for violations of these ordinances were logged.
First offense violation of these ordinances carries a PHP500 fine, which brought in an average of PHP106.9 million to the city’s coffers in 2025.
Meanwhile, Tagel said there are proposals to revise the existing speed limit ordinance, which sets a maximum of 20 kilometers per hour (kph) at the Central Business District and other major roads, and 30 kph at inner roads.
“This was fully implemented in 2025 to address the road accidents attributed to speed and mechanical problems aggravated by the speed of the vehicle,” the police officer said.
He said the ordinance proved to be effective as the occurrence of accidents decreased when it was implemented.
The city government earlier procured speed guns for the use of the BCPO in apprehending vehicles that violate the speed limit. (PNA)
