Apo Island trips cancelled due to rough seas caused by 'amihan'

DUMAGUETE CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard cancelled all sea travel to and from Apo Island in Dauin, Negros Oriental on Thursday due to rough seas caused by the northeast monsoon or “amihan”.

Lt. Marionne Abigal Enopia, Coast Guard Station Negros Oriental commander, told the Philippine News Agency in an interview that the travel suspension advisory issued at 7 a.m. remains in effect.

“All passenger motor bancas to and from Apo Island via the Dauin and Malatapay, Zamboanguita wharves are not allowed to travel due to huge waves and strong winds that can put the lives of the people at risk,” Enopia said.

She explained that even without a gale force warning or a tropical cyclone, the Coast Guard can suspend sea travel for smaller vessels when necessary.

Meanwhile, Cuadro Alas Navigation Lines, Inc. also cancelled its fast craft trips from the Sibulan port (Negros Oriental) wharf to Liloan port in Santander, Cebu also due to rough seas, Enopia said.

Maayo Shipping, Inc., which operates roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) vessels at the Sibulan port, also transferred its barges to the Tampi port in Amlan, Negros Oriental.

Enopia reiterated that during days like this, the Coast Guard advises travelers to head straight to Tampi, as barge services there to Cebu are typically the last to be canceled during inclement weather. (PNA)
